SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 2nd May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Vice President and Counsellor of Economy, Industry, Commerce and Self-Employed of the Government of the Canary Islands, Manuel Domínguez, has signed a collaboration agreement today for the establishment of the Interuniversity Chair of Commerce between the Ministry and the universities of La Laguna and Las Palmas de Gran Canary.
The signing ceremony was attended by the Deputy Minister of Industry, Commerce and Consumption, Felipe Afonso El Jaber, the Director General of Commerce, David Mille, along with the rectors of both universities, Francisco Javier García and Lluís Serra Majem, respectively, as well as representatives from the commercial sector of the islands.
Counsellor Manuel Domínguez stated, “The Government, in partnership with the two Canarian universities, has initiated a process to enhance the training in commercial activities to ensure that Canarian businesses can continue to thrive in line with the significant changes in today’s society.”
Domínguez expressed gratitude to the two Canarian public universities for their involvement and encouraged other institutions, as well as private initiatives, to participate in the chair to bring additional value to a sector “crucial for the economic growth of the Canary Islands.”
The main objective of this initiative is to boost training and research studies focusing on commercial activities and related services, in addition to promoting commerce as a valuable activity that contributes to the economic progress of the archipelago.
The chair has an initial budget of 30,000 Euros fully funded by the Ministry of Economy and will be allocated annually in equal portions of 15,000 Euros between the two Canarian universities. The agreement is valid for four years.
The Rector of the University of La Laguna, Francisco Javier García, highlighted that the chair will help “enhance training, research, and dissemination of the immense potential and value of commercial activities in the archipelago.”
The Rector of ULPGC, Lluís Serra, emphasised that through this agreement, “we address the challenge of engaging our teaching and research staff in proposing new actions and work strategies that will enhance the competitive capacity of the commercial sector in the Canary Islands.”
He also underlined the interuniversity aspect of the Chair, “enabling us to deepen actions that support entrepreneurship, fostering and managing innovative talent, and attracting academic excellence to a fundamental sector for the economy.”
