SEAWEED TENERIFE | Algae takeover at Punta de Abona Beach in Arico

The Punta de Abona beach in Arico has been invaded by seaweed. The amount is so significant that it covers a large part of this bathing area. This led Coalición Canaria (CC) in Arico to denounce the lack of cleanliness and maintenance of the aforementioned beach, “an area that has been full of decomposing sargassum algae for weeks, generating numerous complaints from residents and users without the City Council doing absolutely anything”.

The spokesperson for CC in the municipality, Víctor García, criticized that “the inaction of the local government of PSOE and PP is such that they have done nothing to clean up this beach and the rest of the coast. These algae cause the beach to fill with garbage, leading to the appearance of flies and dead animals, and while this is happening, the City Council does nothing”.

García points out in a statement that “from our political party, we have formally requested a week ago that the beach and the rest of the coast be cleaned once and for all of this algae, but silence and inaction is the response offered by the local Government led by Olivia Delgado”.

“When the sargassum accumulates on the beaches, it decomposes, generating numerous environmental, economic, and social problems. That’s why we demand that the Arico City Council clean up Punta de Abona beach and the rest of the coastal areas of the municipality, stop being inactive, and take action,” García denounces.

On the other hand, CC in Arico regrets that the local Government “claims as its own some works being carried out by the State Coastal Authority”. Nationalists refer to the works to repair access to the same Punta de Abona beach, “where the previous government had all the procedures ready for the Coastal Authority to intervene in the repair of the access,” the note states.

However, “now the City Council is claiming credit for these works when in reality they are being carried out by the Coastal Authority, and this is happening because they have nothing to publicize as they do absolutely nothing,” Víctor García concludes.
