‘Preserve La Tejita’ urges Tenerife Cabildo to drop Motor Circuit project and acquire La Tejita land

A plea has been made by the Preserve La Tejita Platform to the president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, urging the cancellation of the Motor Circuit project – which has already been awarded for 44 million Euros – and proposing that a portion of the funds be redirected towards acquiring the plot for the La Tejita hotel development.

“This action would restore one of the most iconic landscapes of Tenerife to its people, prevent an environmental disaster, and address a key demand of various groups and demonstrators. It would demonstrate the empathy, common sense, and commitment of the island’s politicians from different governing bodies and political affiliations,” state the platform in their open letter.

The platform highlights that the Ombudsman has raised concerns that the project “fails to meet numerous mandatory regulations,” leaving it in a state of uncertainty. They add that proceeding with the project would involve promoting a public investment of almost 50 million Euros “that would not comply with current legislation.”

“It is also important to note that the extensive list of necessary corrections would significantly escalate the project’s costs, potentially rendering it unviable. The majority of citizens did not request a Motor Circuit, do not intend to make use of it, and do not wish for their tax money to be allocated towards it,” they emphasize.

Therefore, they call upon the president to “take the lead” and assist the Granadilla City Council in the purchase of the land, proposing its inclusion in the Montaña Roja Natural Reserve.

“Actions speak louder than words, and you have the chance to work in the best interests of those you represent. We eagerly await your response,” concludes the letter.
