Fred. Olsen Express and Baleària are enhancing their maritime route between Canarias and Huelva during the summer months. Specifically, from July 1st to September 30th, the number of weekly journeys in each direction will increase from three to four. This will double the number of departures offered during the same period last year.

The route is operated by two ships: the vessel Sicilia, with a capacity for 1,000 passengers and 400 vehicles, as well as the ferry Marie Curie, which can accommodate over 800 passengers and 600 vehicles. This expansion of connections will meet the high demand expected for the summer period, both for passengers and for the transportation of goods between the Peninsula and the Canary Islands.

According to the Fleet Director of Fred. Olsen Express, Juan Ignacio Liaño, “in January, thanks to the addition of a second ship for the route, the ferry Sicilia, we were able to serve all those customers who have welcomed our connection with the Peninsula.”

On the other hand, the Managing Director of Baleària, Georges Bassoul, highlighted “the commitment to flexibility and connectivity, to strengthen the route and ensure the offer and comfort of passengers during these high-demand dates.”

Starting July 1st, departures will be available from Huelva on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, all heading to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, except for the Wednesday trip, which will only connect with Tenerife. Departures from the islands will be on Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays, with the latter day having two trips from Tenerife.

Five years of a strategic alliance to connect the Canary Islands and the Peninsula through Huelva

The service between the Peninsula and the Canary Islands, operated by Fred. Olsen Express and Baleària for over five years, demonstrates this strategic alliance for the maritime connection between the islands and the Peninsula. Since its inception, the connection has transported over a million linear meters of cargo and over 155,000 passengers between Huelva and the Canary Islands, consolidating a key route for freight transport. Among the services of the two ships covering this route, cabins, dining, and pet services stand out.

About Fred. Olsen Express

Fred. Olsen Express has been connecting the Canary Islands by sea for 50 years. The shipping company began its journey in 1974 with the first Gomera Ferry between San Sebastián de La Gomera and Los Cristianos, in Tenerife. Since then, it has maintained its commitment to the development of maritime transport in the archipelago, through a service provided by state-of-the-art ships based on comfort, speed, and flexibility.

True to its mission to generate wealth within the Canarian community, the shipping company has a team of nearly 1,000 people. Currently, it operates through five maritime lines. Since 2018, it has also connected the archipelago with the Iberian Peninsula by linking Gran Canaria and Tenerife with Huelva.

Fred. Olsen Express is a leader in the regional market. It carries out an average of 22,000 trips per year and annually transports over 3.5 million people, more than 63,000 pets, around a million cars, and approximately 1,300,000 linear meters of cargo, equivalent to about 100,000 freight vehicles. Since its inception, over 85 million passengers have relied on the company.

Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Canarian Sustainable Development Agenda 2030, through its ‘In Harmony with the Sea’ program, Fred. Olsen Express applies innovation in all its processes to minimize its environmental footprint.
