It was like a parade of zombies straight out of The Walking Dead, but in a car version. This is what a co-pilot witnessed while travelling along one of the main roads in Tenerife.
On the Southern motorway, a video shows how, while the right lane is empty, a line of cars is congested in the left lane, one after the other. The X account @TenerifeVial describes it as “the strange case of Tenerife residents stationed in the left lane“.
This is becoming increasingly common on both the TF-1 and TF-5, and it is prohibited by the General Traffic Regulations, overseen by the Directorate General of Traffic. As long as there is space in the slower lane, vehicles should drive in that lane.
The law states that any vehicle remaining in the fast lane without justification can be fined up to 200 Euros. The reason is that it would be obstructing traffic flow without carrying out any of the actions that allow driving in the left lane of the motorway such as overtaking.
[–>These fines are justified to reduce road hazards. Despite the potential consequences of this action, it is not uncommon to witness it on several occasions.

A noteworthy observation

Unrelated to this traffic violation, the video highlights an important observation. Tenerife Vial also notices that, at the exit 42 of the TF-1, the surface of the right lane is in suboptimal conditions.
