THE VERONICAS TENERIFE | “From intoxicated individuals to assertive vendors”: a narrative of a British publication following a night in an entertainment district in Tenerife

“Tenerife has a guarantee of sunshine” declared one of the most listened songs of the 70s. Weather conditions that have made the island a destination where tourists choose to spend their leisure days, with a particular passion for the south of Tenerife. There, dozens of businesses have focused on catering to visitors, including one of the most popular party areas for both foreigners and locals: The Veronicas.

This place, located in Playa de Las Americas, within the municipality of Arona, has become an oasis of parties, music, fun… but also fights and disturbances. It is one of the nightlife spots where more incidents are reported throughout the year, to the extent that even a British newspaper has labelled it as a “sordid place“.

A journalist from Express has penned a chronicle of a night at The Veronicas: “‘I visited Tenerife’s most notorious town and can see why locals complain so much’ (I visited the most notorious village in Tenerife and I can see why the locals complain so much).

[–>

Zak Garner-Purkis, the journalist behind the article, describes what he witnessed at The Veronicas as “ranging from drunk singles who are the target of strippers to aggressive drug dealers, the party area in Playa de Las Americas is a sordid place“.

“I am observing how chaos unfolds from a place with a notorious reputation for the antics of British tourists”

[–>

The chronicle begins at 1:00 in the morning, where “the British are out in force”. A drunken woman stumbling and almost getting run over, a man running in circles with his belly exposed, another staggering and relieving himself, or a couple swaying shoulder to shoulder: “I am observing how chaos unfolds from a place with a notorious reputation for the antics of British tourists“.

[–>

The article continues to paint a negative picture of this place, discussing situations where some women “receive male attention bordering on harassment”. An intense atmosphere that, according to Garner-Purkis, “is heightened by the fact that every bar has at least a couple of stag and hen parties”.

[–>

To conclude his article, after discussing the drinks being sold, the interest of the promoters, or how women are used as bait, the journalist wraps up the chronicle of his night at The Veronicas in a straightforward manner: “It’s not just about strippers or strong liquors, there are also drugs”.
