The City Council of Santa Cruz, under the administration of Mobility overseen by council member Evelyn Alonso, has announced that the second company awarded the contract for electric scooter rentals, named ‘Tier’, will initiate the deployment of its fleet across the city starting tomorrow, April 29. “Tier plans to roll out all 646 authorized scooters over the next two weeks. In addition to the 100 scheduled for Monday, more will be added to complete their deployment,” announced the Mobility Councilor.
The Mobility department had previously awarded contracts to Tier Mobility and Ridedott to introduce a total of 1,292 electric scooters for rental services in Santa Cruz. These companies are given three months to introduce at least 50% of the planned fleet.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez emphasized the importance of compliance not only from the companies in accordance with regulations for personal mobility vehicles (VMPs) to ensure a high-quality service and prevent issues of overexploitation, but also from users who must responsibly adhere to traffic regulations and the municipal Mobility ordinance.
Designated Parking Spaces
Councilor Alonso specified that the city will have a maximum of 1,292 scooters distributed across different districts, with allocated parking spaces as follows: nine spots for 48 scooters in Anaga; 63 spots for 448 scooters in Center-Ifara; 43 spots for 172 VMPs in Ofra-South Coast; 67 spots for 392 in Health-La Salle; and 58 spots for 232 VMPs in the Southwest. Each company is required to pay a €20,000 fee for public domain use and a €50 per scooter deposit.
The councilor highlighted that with the approval of the Mobility ordinance and the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS), Santa Cruz now has regulations promoting the coexistence of new personal transportation modes with a pedestrian-friendly and eco-conscious urban design. These regulations aim to modernize the city in line with current and European mobility standards.
Regarding the upcoming service by Tier starting tomorrow, the cost to unlock a scooter will be €1, with each minute of use billed at €0.22. Local residents can use the scooters for free once their residency is verified. Furthermore, frequent users (with over 100 minutes weekly) will receive bonuses and promotions through the app.
Tier has committed to launching promotions to encourage sustainable and safe urban mobility in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, including providing helmets to users and supporting local activities by offering free or discounted rides. Additionally, during level 3 air quality alerts, reduced rates or free unlocks will be implemented.
