SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 27th April (EUROPA PRESS) –

Valery Álvarez Plasencia, a young representative of the Santa Cruz Carnival Culture Classroom, donned the traditional ‘Currutaca de La Laguna’ outfit and has been chosen as the Queen of the May 2024 Festivities.

The event, which took place in Plaza de La Candelaria, featured a parade of 35 candidates dressed in typical Canarian attire, captivating the interest of citizens in one of the key events of the founding festivities.

The city’s mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, bestowed the scepter and sash upon the new Queen. Meanwhile, Festival Councilor, Javier Caraballero, presented awards to her court. The first Lady of Honor, Alexia Fernández González, adorned in the ‘Tenerife Transition’ costume representing the Murgas Las Marchilongas Cultural Association, and Sofía María Palenzuela Zamorín, in the ‘Tegueste Woman in Sunday Dress’ attire, clinched the second spot representing Masa Tenerife Coral.

The titles of third and fourth Maid of Honor were claimed by Daniela Hernández Rodríguez, showcasing the ‘Woman of Lanzarote’ outfit representing the Mercedes Vera Plaza Alcalá Galiano Neighborhood Group; and Michelle Palmero de Araujo, in the traditional ‘Woman of the Esperanza in Sunday dress’ attire representing Star Tenerife.

The gala was helmed by Paula Álvarez and hosted by journalist Pilar Rumeu. The event featured performances by the group Añate (responsible for the opening act) and live vocal performances by Isabel González, Manolo Estupiñán, Almudena Hernández, Ricky Furiati, Darío Cabrera, and St. Pedro.

The 35 contestants paraded before a judging panel comprising Natanael Padrón Navarro, Tenerife Moda’s director; Aarón Morales Pérez, a historian and Canary Islands garment researcher; María del Carmen Almenara Ramos, a fashion technical expert specialising in traditional Canarian clothing; Juan de la Cruz Rodríguez, a retired technician from the Museum of History and Anthropology of Tenerife and recipient of the Gold Medal of Tenerife; Concepción Rodríguez González, the director of the La Guancha Crafts Center; Antonio Rodríguez Ruiz, an artisan and member of the Clothing Sector Council of the Cabildo of Tenerife; with María Vidal Conesa serving as the secretary.

The May Festival programme continues on Saturday with the Magician and Children’s Magician Election Gala to be held at 7:00 p.m. in Plaza de La Candelaria.
