During yesterday’s plenary session in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a motion put forward by the socialist representative, Florentino Guzmán, was unanimously approved. The motion demands that the Cabildo fulfils the commitment made in 2022 to purchase the San Joaquín castle, a former 16th-century military stronghold situated in the Villa Benitez neighbourhood near the Vistabella viewpoint, with the aim of restoring this dilapidated structure and converting it into an educational and cultural hub.
This historical gem, part of the city’s heritage, was listed for sale on real estate websites for €3.1 million, prompting the Cabildo to take steps towards its recuperation.
Addressing this issue, the Heritage Councillor, Javier Rivero, stated, “The Cabildo has initiated technical, financial, and legal studies for the acquisition of San Joaquín castle. We are hopeful that these studies will be concluded successfully.”
During the session, other topics were discussed, including the transition of former Vox councillor, Juan Manuel Hermoso, to the mixed group, thereby retaining the Vox group with two councillors. Moreover, the PSOE’s proposal to alter the number of spokespersons in the commissions following Hermoso’s resignation from Vox was rejected.
