The Department of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands has declared the urgent processing of the file to contract the construction of 11 protected public housing units in La Jurada, a nucleus of San Isidro (Granadilla de Abona). The decision stems from the Canary Islands Housing Institute.
This action, with a tender budget of 1,641,781 euros, is part of the decree-law 1/2024, of February 19, on urgent measures in the housing sector. Declaring the urgency determines that the processing of the file will take place in half the time of the deadlines legally established for tendering, awarding and formalising the corresponding contract.
The department managed by councillor Pablo Rodríguez explains that the tender budget will be divided into three annual instalments, with the first corresponding to this year, amounting to 471,661 euros; the government will pay out 1,051,747 euros next year and in 2026, the estimated amount is 118,372 euros. To the total budget, one must add the amount corresponding to the retention of 10% of the tender cost in the last instalment, valued at 164,178 euros, making the total budget 1,805,959 euros, as explained by the Department of Public Works, Housing and Mobility.
The project to build 11 protected public housing units in La Jurada aims to address the housing needs identified in Granadilla de Abona as laid out in the Canary Islands 2020-2025 Housing Plan, to promote the construction of social housing properties.
This new initiative complements the rehabilitation and maintenance work already carried out by this department of the Government of the Canary Islands on a group of 41 homes in Granadilla de Abona, with the aim of improving the public housing stock of the municipality.

To tackle the issue of a shortage of social housing in the municipality, the local Government of Granadilla de Abona will expropriate incomplete buildings from past crises to offer them to low-income residents. The plan includes identifying publicly designated land for facilities and proceeding with its reclassification as residential land for public housing, as advocated by the mayor of Granadilla, Jennifer Miranda.

In the first nine months of the term, Granadilla de Abona granted over 3,000 square meters of land to Icavi for housing construction and proceeded to unblock 294 units in eight unfinished buildings in Los Hinojeros, which were acquired by Orion Rental from the Society for the Management of Assets Arising from Bank Restructuring, requiring an investment of 7,360,500 euros.
