Mousikê will delight jazz enthusiasts with a diverse program, presenting a masterclass and an exclusive concert featuring the legendary Gary Willis in the Canary Islands. These two events are scheduled for Wednesday, 1st May at the Leal Theater in La Laguna to celebrate the International Jazz Day in an exceptional manner.
This initiative is a collaboration between Mousikê and Fábrica La Isleta, supported by the Autonomous Organization for Musical Activities and Culture and the Department of Culture of the La Laguna City Council. The masterclass, which is open to the public until full capacity is reached, following Mousikê’s tradition, will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The much-anticipated concert will kick off at 8:00 p.m., described by the Organization as unforgettable. Tickets are available for purchase on the Teatro Leal website and box office for twelve Euros.
Gary Willis, a legendary figure in the realm of bass, epitomizes the perfect blend of technical prowess and artistic expression. Throughout his illustrious career spanning over five decades, Willis has established himself as a bassist, composer, instrument innovator and educator, receiving acclaim for his groundbreaking contributions to contemporary jazz and fusion music.
Raised in a family of musicians, Willis discovered his love for the bass at a young age. His early musical influences varied from Gospel, The Jazz Crusaders, and Tower of Power to the intricate compositions of Weather Report, while staying rooted in R&B. This diverse musical background shaped Willis’ unique style, characterised by a seamless fusion of complex harmonies and rhythmic innovations.
During his professional journey, Gary Willis gained prominence in the 1980s, garnering recognition for his collaborations with jazz and fusion visionaries like Wayne Shorter and Allan Holdsworth. As a founding member of Tribal Tech, Willis contributed distinctive basslines and innovative compositions that defined the band’s sonic identity. His fearless exploration of uncharted musical territories distinguishes him, establishing his presence as a formidable force in the global jazz and fusion scenes.
Beyond his collaborative work, Willis has released several solo albums showcasing his growth as an artist.
