The Canarias se Agota Platform has organized a new march scheduled for tomorrow in Tenerife to address the lack of action from the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, following a meeting held with five representatives of the group last Tuesday.
This protest will kick off at San Benito Park and proceed to Portezuelo.
Urging supporters attending the protest march to bring a suitcase symbolizing being forced to leave the islands, reflecting on the ongoing challenges faced on the Canary Islands. The demonstration aims to catch the attention from visitors at Tenerife North airport.
Additionally, the Platform has arranged for a public assembly on Tuesday, April 30 at 5:00 p.m. at Plaza de la Concepción in La Laguna, supporting individuals who have been on a hunger strike since the 11th.
Support for Ongoing Protests
The 18 groups behind the April 20 demonstration advocating for a change in the tourism model in the Canary Islands have urged the regional government to implement various measures, including a complete halt on new hotel and resort developments.
They have stated that for any real change in the tourism sector to occur, the Government of the Canary Islands should immediately halt construction projects related to tourism developments at Cuna del Alma and La Tejita in Tenerife.
Criticizing these projects for not adhering to environmental regulations, endangering protected species, and encroaching on archaeological sites within the construction areas.
Environmental organizations have highlighted the authority and legal framework available to the Government of the Canary Islands to cease these construction activities, refuting any contrary claims and accusing the government of scheming to facilitate project resumptions.
In the UK we have similar problems in coastal resorts, where locals are finding it impossible to find rented accommodation at a rate they can afford and local first time buyers being forced out of the area due to the costs being forced up by outsiders buying holiday homes and buy to lets. Local housing for locals must be a priority everywhere.
