New Initiative in Tenerife: Island-wide Plan for Camping Areas and Motorhome Facilities

The Tenerife Cabildo has given the green light to an institutional motion during a plenary session on Friday to develop a comprehensive plan for camping areas, parking spaces, and overnight facilities for caravans and motorhomes across the island.

The aim is to ensure that these designated areas are equipped with essential services, including potable water, electricity, and sanitation facilities, in order to mitigate any adverse impacts on the environment and local mobility.

Additionally, the agreement stipulates the initiation of a temporary ordinance process, with the draft plan and the strategic environmental assessment document being submitted to Tenerife’s Environmental Assessment Commission (Ceat) for review under the Strategic Environmental Assessment.

The Cabildo of Tenerife will facilitate the negotiation of collaborative agreements with the relevant municipalities to kickstart construction, following the approved blueprint, in the initially identified zones earmarked for the island-wide network of designated areas outlined in the forthcoming island plan.

The primary goal is to provide recreational options for the growing number of enthusiasts seeking such activities, with uniform standards applied across the entire island, ensuring quality, access, and safety, along with efficient public services and amenities.

This initiative will also promote regulated, sustainable, and environmentally-respectful practices along the island’s coastlines and natural landscapes, the predominant locations for such recreational activities.

The agreement also emphasises the importance of developing the plan with a sustainable and eco-conscious approach, ensuring all designated areas are situated in unprotected zones and appropriately equipped to support the proposed infrastructure.

The money would be better spent providing homes for locals, not encouraging more tourists.
