The Tenerife Island Council has announced a new initiative aimed at establishing a tourist tax specifically for visitors to the island. The main objective of this measure is the conservation and maintenance of protected natural areas, ensuring their enjoyment for future generations. President of the Council, Rosa Dávila, highlighted this proposal as an effort to highlight the value of Tenerife’s natural landscapes and their significance for the community and tourists.

Details

During a recent visit to the wastewater treatment plant in Guía de Isora, Rosa Dávila explained that the fee would be collected exclusively from tourists accessing protected natural areas, and its use would be strictly linked to the improvement and conservation of these places. This proposal was also supported by Lope Afonso, Vice President and Minister of Tourism, who stated that the proceeds would help enhance the visitor experience and environmental conservation.

The Council will bring this motion to the Plenary session this Friday, where the conduct of a legal and economic study for the approval of the tax will be debated. The measure is presented as part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable tourism that benefits not only the island’s economy but also preserves its natural resources.

Strategy

In addition to introducing the fee, the Tenerife Island Council is updating its management strategy for all areas of the island Corporation. This renewed approach seeks a more sustainable destination in environmental, economic, and social terms. The integration of the tourist tax into this strategy expands the Council’s commitment to protecting the environment and the well-being of Tenerife residents.

It is expected that the revenue generated from the tourist tax will be used for the conservation, maintenance, and enhancement of protected natural areas. Additionally, the implementation of new services to enrich the visitor experience is planned. The administration of these funds will be carried out transparently, ensuring that the benefits directly contribute to protecting the island’s valuable natural resources.

Proposal

The proposal to implement a tourist tax in Tenerife represents a significant step towards a more sustainable tourism model. By linking the proceeds of this tax to the conservation of natural spaces, the Tenerife Island Council demonstrates its commitment to a development that respects and protects its unique natural environment. With this measure, Tenerife not only seeks to enhance the quality of the tourist experience but also ensure the preservation of its natural heritage for the enjoyment of future generations.
