The rector of TECH Technological University, Pedro Navarro, argued on Friday that “embracing innovation brings results,” contrasting it with the static nature of public and traditional universities that have seen no evolution.
During a speech at the ‘Canary Islands Towards the Future’ forum organized by Europa Press, he endorsed the TECH University’s “digital native” model, stressing the importance of innovating from the university’s core.
He highlighted the incongruity of still having university professors giving lectures from a “pulpit” while students simply take notes, in a time of unparalleled technological advancement.
Navarro emphasised how the landscape has changed with the advent of new technologies and the internet, enabling universities to welcome individuals globally while maintaining high educational standards.
He cited examples of his university students receiving classes from the physical trainer of the Boston Celtics or the Director of Intelligence at Red Bull, illustrating that significant changes lead to greater opportunities for improvement.
He advocated for a “student-centric” educational model, catering to all their needs and leveraging technology to provide flexibility in studying.
According to Navarro, students can achieve much more when technological tools are seamlessly integrated into their learning experience.
Navarro also highlighted the contrast between public universities laden with regulations and constraints imposed by public administrations, and TECH University, which operates with more freedom to experiment with innovative educational formats. “Innovation is ingrained in our daily practices,” he added.
