Commencing tomorrow, Friday, the town of Icod de los Vinos is gearing up for its annual extravaganza, showcasing all the cherished traditions as part of the municipality’s celebrations in honour of San Marcos Evangelista.

The Councilor for Festivals in Icod de los Vinos, Cathaysa Concepción, expresses anticipation for the upcoming weekend, stating, “It will be a weekend filled with excitement as we showcase the rich tapestry of traditions from all corners of Icod.” Furthermore, he emphasises, “We take pride in being the municipality with the most vibrant traditions in the Canary Islands, making this event truly special to witness.”

Tomorrow, Friday, the highly anticipated “Villa de Ycod” spectacle, under the direction of Adrián García, will take place. A performance that blends music, theatre, and customs to celebrate the history of the City of the Drago. This year, a notable change comes with not only crowning the Maga of the April festivities, as was customary until last year, but also including men in the running for the title of party magician.

“Villa de Ycod” will feature performances by Compañía Pieles, the talented timplist Benito Cabrera alongside Ritual S.XXI, the folkloric group Añate, and the Ben-Gara Cultural Association. The event will commence at 9:00 p.m. in Plaza Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres.

The Grand Parade of Living Traditions in the Canary Islands

On Saturday, the 20th, at 7:00 p.m., the image of San Marcos will be displayed in the main parish’s portico before proceeding to Plaza Luis de León Huerta, where it will join the Walk of Traditions in its twenty-fifth edition. Once all the traditions of Icod arrive at the square, San Marcos will lead the return march back to Plaza Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres to receive offerings from the attending neighbours.

The same Saturday, after the procession, the Canarian Festival will take place, also in its XXV edition. The night will be filled with festivities, folkloric groups, and performances by the orchestras Los Volcánicos, Tropin, and Generasión. It is customary to attend in traditional Canarian attire.
On Sunday, at 6:00 p.m., the XI Afternoon of Taifa will take place in Plaza Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres. This event will feature performances by the El Tanque Municipal Folklore School, the Támbara folkloric group, the Acorán Cultural and Folkloric Association, and the Icod de los Vinos Municipal Folklore School. It is encouraged to participate in traditional Canarian dress.
