Once again, this Saturday the Camino del Hermano Pedro route will be travelled, covering the nearly 19 kilometers between Vilaflor and the religious site of La Cueva in Granadilla de Abona – a journey that was last undertaken 17 years ago. This year, the route includes a new extension from Vilaflor de Chasna to Charco del Pino in Granadilla. Over fifty individuals have already registered for the pilgrimage, which is jointly organized by the municipalities of Granadilla de Abona and Vilaflor, with the support of AENA, TITSA, and volunteers from the religious site.
Since 2005, efforts have been made to revive and promote the Camino del Hermano Pedro and its surrounding paths, aiming to restore a cultural symbol that has been preserved through the years, thanks to the residents of Granadilla and Vilaflor. This initiative aims to connect the various municipalities of the region (Fasnia, Arico, Granadilla de Abona, and San Miguel de Abona), as well as the broader Southern region of the island and the entire Canary Islands.
“More Than Just a Local Endeavour”
Carmen Dolores Rodríguez de Vera, the Granada City Council’s Security Councillor, highlights the importance of registering for the pilgrimage to track the number of participants. “Registration numbers are increasing steadily, and we estimate over five hundred participants so far,” the mayor mentions.
“A security coordination meeting was recently conducted to oversee all security and emergency teams involved in the security plan,” confirms the councillor. The security operation involves approximately 60 team members who will be positioned along the entire route.
Joaquín Cabrera, Vilaflor’s second deputy mayor, emphasizes that the pilgrimage is not just a local promotion but a spiritual journey. “Similar to Fátima, Lourdes, or the Camino de Santiago,” he describes. He anticipates that the actual number of participants may be around 25% of the total registered for the route on Saturday.
