SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 17th April. (EUROPA PRESS) –
A working meeting took place on Wednesday between the Deputy Minister of Tourism of the Canary Islands, José Manuel Sanabria, and the general director of Tourism Planning, Training and Promotion, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, in conjunction with the Association of Tourist Municipalities of the Canary Islands (AMTC) to discuss the draft Law on Sustainable Management of Tourist Property Use. They have agreed to establish a working group.
During the meeting, local authorities shared their thoughts on the legislation put forward by the regional government. This law not only covers regulations on tourist accommodation but also has implications for urban development, land use planning, the environment, housing, quality of life, historical heritage preservation, and sustainable transport.
José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, the president of AMTC and mayor of Adeje, emphasised the importance of having legislation in place to regulate activities like holiday rentals, regardless of the individual stances of each municipal council.
The general director outlined the progress of the new legislation, which is currently in the phase of public consultation and feedback. He also noted that the public feedback period has been extended by five days and will now end on 9th May.
“We recognise the necessity for this law to enjoy broad consensus among all relevant authorities. As a result, we will be convening a collaborative working group with the Association of Tourist Municipalities of the Canary Islands before the end of April,” the general director stated in a press release from his office.
It was reiterated that the drafting of the legislation is being conducted with utmost transparency, incorporating public engagement processes and direct dialogues with social stakeholders and civil society.
Municipal representatives and technical personnel from San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Mogan, Adeje, Arona, Santiago del Teide, Yaiza, Teguise, and Antigua participated virtually in the meeting.
