The April 20 protest named Canary Islands have a limit! For a change of model! has been gaining importance since its announcement. What started as a call in some islands, this movement will be represented in all seven Canary Islands, as well as other cities such as Barcelona, Madrid, or Berlin.

One of the initial points in the call was Tenerife, where the route has already been announced for a protest seeking to be “the largest in history“. The movement will go through five of the main streets in Santa Cruz:

  • It will start at Weyler Square, with the kick-off scheduled for 12:00.
  • It will pass through the streets Méndez Núñez, El Pilar, Valentín Sanz, and Castillo.
  • To finish, it will go through La Candelaria Square and end at the doors of the Insular Council.

An International Protest

The mobilization, called at the end of March by a dozen groups, mostly environmentalists, will reach Europe. Concentrations have also been announced in Madrid, Granada, Málaga, and Barcelona within the national geography.

On the other hand, in Berlin there will also be a concentration in support of the movement that aims to speak out against the economic model in the Canary Islands. They have made it clear that this is not about tourism phobia or against the hotel sector already present on the islands, but against the uncontrolled growth model of these infrastructures.

The President of the Canary Islands Government sees it as “an opportunity”

The 20A has been supported by various sectors. In the music industry, singer Cruz Cafuné voiced support for the movement during his concert in Tenerife, attended by over 12,000 people. From the entertainment sector, the carnival groups have come together to urge the people of Tenerife to mobilise.

Regarding the political sphere, the President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, sees this protest as “an opportunity“. After assessing that it is good for the people to speak out on important autonomy issues, he even stated, “if I were just another citizen, I would probably go“.

The groups promoting this protest request “seriousness and civility“, with the aim of making the people’s stance clear in the mobilisation, without disturbances and without a festive atmosphere.
