The Tenerife Island Council will be implementing changes to night-time traffic in La Laguna this Wednesday, the 17th of April, to facilitate the relocation of the sculpture of Father Anchieta to the saint’s roundabout, where the construction of a pedestrian walkway is underway.

Specific road closures will be in effect between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. on the northbound lanes from the TF-5 leading to the roundabout, as well as on Avenida Trinidad and Avenida del Astrofísico Francisco Sánchez around the roundabout and in the vehicle routes in that area.

Alternative routes for affected traffic will be through San Benito and Lora and Tamayo.

To ensure the safety of the sculpture of Father Anchieta during transportation, it will be securely placed inside a metal structure on a truck and then placed in the construction area adjacent to the Faculty of Biological Sciences.

On Thursday, the 18th of April, a crane will be used to carry out the installation of the sculpture onto its base.

Drivers passing through the area during this process are advised by the Tenerife Island Council to exercise extreme caution, follow signage, and be mindful of Road Service personnel.

The Story of Padre Anchieta’s Sculpture

The bronze monumental sculpture honouring the Jesuit priest from La Laguna and missionary to Brazil, José de Anchieta, stands at a height of five metres.

Designed by Brazilian sculptor Bruno Giordi, the sculpture was funded by the people and Government of Brazil.

Originally unveiled on the 27th of November in 1960 at the Glorieta de Brasil, the sculpture was later relocated in 2021 to the Central Campus of the University of La Laguna near Cruz de Piedra to accommodate the ongoing construction of the pedestrian ring.
