The Ministry of Tourism and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands has opted to lengthen the timeframe for receiving objections and comments on the preliminary draft of the Law on the Sustainable Management of Holiday Home Tourism by an additional five working days. The consultation period, which began on the 3rd of April, will now conclude on 9th May.
This extension was granted following a request from the Canarian Federation of Municipalities (Fecam).
“We recognise that local councils play a crucial role in effectively implementing the regulation, and therefore, we aim to offer them more time for a thorough review together with their legal teams, and to formulate their suggestions, particularly those concerning eco-friendly initiatives,” stated Tourism Minister Jessica de León in a release.
The minister also reiterated the government’s plan to expedite the process once the public feedback phase and the consultation process conclude, hence the extension will not be prolonged to the maximum legal limit of ten working days.
On his part, the Director-General of Tourism Planning, Training and Promotion, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, emphasised that the agreement with Fecam reflects the government’s commitment to dialogue, engagement, transparency, and consensus since the inception of the Law on Sustainable Holiday Home Tourism Planning project.
Additionally, he mentioned that he will be visiting the various islands in the upcoming days to meet with mayors and listen to their suggestions.
