The spacious pedestrian pathway at the Padre Anchieta roundabout in La Laguna is set to reduce waiting times in traffic jams by 50% during peak hours. “Each day, around 20,000 pedestrians will cross eight zebra crossings, navigating the flow of over 50,000 cars on the TF-5 at the Padre Anchieta intersection,” explained Rosa, the President of Tenerife Cabildo during yesterday’s site visit.
The official tour of the upcoming infrastructure, of which the initial section is already in place, was attended by the University of La Laguna Rector, Francisco García; Minister of Mobility, Eulalia García; Minister of Highways, Dámaso Arteaga; First Deputy Mayor of La Laguna, Badel Albelo; Municipal Services Councillor Francisco José Hernández, and Promotion and Local Development Councillor Jesús Domingo Galván.
“We have chosen the university community to inaugurate the pathway. This symbolic gesture signifies the importance of this extensive pedestrian route that will seamlessly connect urban zones, universities, and transportation hubs,” stated Rosa.
Furthermore, Rosa emphasized that this infrastructure will not only be a symbol of Tenerife’s sustainability but will also create a communal space around the Anchieta university campus. It is projected to enhance traffic flow, thereby reducing current waiting times by half.
Regarding the project’s engineering excellence, ULL Rector Francisco García underscored its significance and quality. He stated that it will emerge as a landmark structure for the island and embody sustainability, pedestrian safety, and impact traffic flow and the university community.
Similarly, La Laguna City Council’s First Deputy Mayor, Badel Albelo, noted, “This marks a significant milestone in the project’s development. We are optimistic that it will streamline mobility in a critical area for accessing La Laguna’s city centre and will bring the university community’s infrastructure closer to both sides of the TF-5.”
Construction on this vital roundabout in La Laguna commenced in November 2021, with Obras Huarte Lain SA securing the 8.8 million euros contract for the development.
