SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 13th April. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Students of Vocational Training (FP) from the Canary Islands who took part in SpainSkills 2024 have clinched one gold, two silver, and two bronze medals during the competitive days of this event. The closing ceremony was held on Saturday in Madrid, attended by Ainhoa Molina, the Director General of Vocational Training and Special Regime Education of the Government of the Canary Islands.
The gold medal was secured by Guayre Antonio Martínez Cosano, a student of Pharmacy and Parapharmacy at the Majada Marcial Integrated Vocational Training Center (CIFP) in Fuerteventura, competing in the exhibition category. The Canary Islands won four medals overall, with two silver medals being awarded to Cooking student Antonio Israel Domínguez García from the Faro de Maspalomas Secondary Education Institute (IES) in Gran Canaria, and to Paula Schiera Martín, a Fashion Technology student from CIFP Las Indias in Tenerife. The two bronze medals were won by Daniela Victoria Brito Afonso from IES Geneto in the Carpentry discipline, and Andrea Napoli, a Plumbing and Heating student at CIFP Virgen de Candelaria, both institutes located in Tenerife.
Last week, Poli Suárez, the Minister of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity, and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, congratulated the winners during the official reception for the Canary Islands team at SpainSkills 2024. He also expressed his intention to request the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, and Sports to consider having the archipelago host a future edition of the national vocational training competition (SpainSkills), or the European (EuroSkills) or world (WorldSkills) phases.
“We need to bridge the gap and showcase that the Canary Islands are more than just a sun and beach destination situated two thousand kilometres away from Madrid. There is enormous potential here,” stated the councillor back then.
The Canary Islands delegation comprised around thirty teachers and students from approximately twenty centres across various professional disciplines, who had secured the gold medal in the Canarias Skills 2023 regional competition. This marked the largest delegation in the history of this Ministry-organized competition aimed at promoting FP, which also reflects a significant commitment from the current Government of the Canary Islands, who recently unveiled their new Insular Map of Vocational Training.
Out of all participating students from the Canary Islands, seventeen were from Tenerife, thirteen from Gran Canaria, and four (two from each) from Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. In terms of distribution across centres, nine were based in Tenerife, nine in Gran Canaria, with one each in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
Specifically, participants came from Integrated Vocational Training Centers (CIFP) Virgen de Candelaria, Zonzamas, San Cristóbal, Las Indias, Majada Marcial, Cesar Manrique, and the Secondary Education Institutes (IES) Tacoronte Óscar Domínguez, Amurga, El Rincón, Arucas Domingo Rivero, Geneto, Mencey Bencomo, Las Galletas, La Minilla, Faro De Maspalomas, José Zerpa, Mencey Bencomo, Ingenio, Puerto de la Cruz Telesforo Bravo, and Lomo La Herradura, as well as the Private Center for Early Childhood, Primary, and Secondary Education (CPEIPS) San Juan Bosco.
Lastly, the competition categories in which the Canary Islands team participated in the national event included mechatronics, CNC milling, welding, bodywork repair, plumbing and heating, electronics, web development, electrical installations, industrial control, joinery, carpentry, floristry, hairdressing, aesthetics, fashion technology, automobile technology, cooking, restaurant and bar service, automobile painting, landscape gardening, refrigeration and air conditioning, ICT network systems administration, socio-health care, window dressing, bakery, 3D animation and games, and hotel reception. The demonstration categories covered CLOUD computing, renewable energy, heavy vehicle technology, collaborative robotics, pharmacy, and parapharmacy.
