The Port Police, National Police, and Local police of Santa Cruz de Tenerife have served eviction notices to individuals camping near the adjacent shoreline to the Maritime Park.
In the images captured by law enforcement and Televisión Canaria, approximately 15 tents can be seen in the vicinity. These tents house individuals in vulnerable situations who are unable to afford accommodation, as their meagre pensions do not cover rental costs.
Consequently, those being evicted are requesting the City Council to provide alternative housing solutions. They argue that thus far, they have only been offered one night at a municipal shelter, which they deem as “insufficient for addressing homelessness.”
The eviction process is being conducted peacefully, with many occupants leaving voluntarily. However, an ambulance is expected to arrive soon to transport a person with severe health issues to a medical facility.
Not the First Notice
This is not the initial eviction notice that these individuals have received. In August of last year, occupants of 12 huts camping on this beach voluntarily vacated the area following the removal of belongings and huts as instructed by the City Council. Nevertheless, more huts reappeared in the weeks that followed.
In November, the municipality sought assistance from the port authorities, who pledged to initiate the necessary actions to close down the settlement.
In February and March of 2024, the occupants were once again informed to vacate the premises. Subsequently, a judge has now sanctioned the eviction, with enforcement being carried out by the Port Police.
