The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set to embark on comprehensive renovation works on San Martín Street starting next May, aligning with the Special Plan for the Protection of the Historical Complex of El Toscal. The Municipal Roads service will undertake the works with an investment of 500,000 euros, scheduled to span across five months.

In a recent announcement, Carlos Tarife, the Councilor for Public Services, outlined the vision of the project as “transforming this central avenue into an inclusive space for all users, reviving commercial areas and enhancing the overall aesthetic by introducing wider sidewalks and shaded zones, elements currently lacking in this urban setting.”

The renovation will complement the ongoing efforts on La Rosa street to revitalize and transform El Toscal. The works will be divided into three distinct phases: the first segment covering Méndez Núñez Street and San Miguel Street; the second stretch from the latter to Santiago Street; and the final section extending from Santiago to La Rosa Street.

Tarife elaborated that “the comprehensive overhaul of San Martín Street will ensure 100% accessibility and sustainability, incorporating more green spaces.” Presently, the street is narrow, with limited pavements, architectural hindrances for individuals with mobility challenges, outdated utilities, and devoid of greenery.

Post-renovation, new tree pits for irrigation and structured soil planters will be installed to promote greenery growth. The asphalt surface will undergo enhancements, and the lighting, sanitation, and supply services will be modernized. An eco-friendly, durable pavement will be deployed to combat air pollutants.

Following a meeting with area residents, the councilor unveiled parts of the project to communicate the works’ timelines and outcomes. This transformation will also integrate residents lacking basic municipal services, culminating in an improved quality of life.

The commencement of works on San Martín Street will necessitate traffic alterations and the cessation of parking in the vicinity. Specifically, 17 parking spaces on San Antonio Street and another 17 on San Martín Street will be temporarily eliminated until the completion of the project.
Tarife highlighted that upon the completion of works on San Martín Street, the pedestrianization of Santiago Street will ensue, encompassing over 700 meters parallel to La Rosa, where vehicular traffic will be restricted.
