The mayor of Granadilla de Abona, Jennifer Miranda, along with the Councilor for Community Wellbeing and Health, Adán García Casañas, met on Monday with the manager of Primary Care in Tenerife, Jesús Delgado. During the meeting, they highlighted the necessity for a medical facility in the coastal centre of Los Abrigos.
The City Council pointed out that currently, Los Abrigos is home to 8,122 residents who have to travel to the nearby town of El Médano for healthcare. This community has long demanded a medical office, prompting the mayor to submit a report justifying the need for such a facility based on population and quality of service criteria. Two potential options were proposed for establishing the clinic.
The first option involves transferring a municipal plot designated for social and healthcare purposes for the construction of the clinic. The second alternative entails utilizing the premises resulting from the modification project of The Sailors’ Square.
The mayor of Granadilla stated that “the medical office in Los Abrigos will help alleviate the patient load at the El Médano office.” Meanwhile, the Councilor for Community Wellbeing and Health mentioned that as part of the Strategic Framework for Primary Care, the goal for 2022 is to have primary care quotas restricted to 1,500 patients. However, the El Médano office, which currently caters to the Los Abrigos population, already serves over 1,800 patients.
The Primary Care Management agreed to assess the feasibility of the proposal and provide the city council with their findings.
