The process to set up the initial module out of the eleven composing the pedestrian bridge above the Padre Anchieta roundabout, located at the entrance to La Laguna, will commence at 10:00 p.m. tomorrow and is estimated to conclude by 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, extending the operation for approximately six hours, as officially confirmed by the Tenerife Cabildo.
This module arrived at the roundabout during the early hours of last Friday after being transported from the port of the capital, where it had arrived on Thursday afternoon from the Seville port. Its transportation necessitated the implementation of a sophisticated arrangement due to its weight (50 tonnes), measurements (40 meters long, 8 meters wide), and curved structure.
Tomorrow evening, the installation process of the piece on the roundabout will commence, and, according to the Cabildo, two large cranes of high tonnage will be involved in the manoeuvre positioning the walkway module in the initial section, where a support will be applied as a safety precaution during the anchoring. Following this, the piece will be welded into place.
Additionally, the island Administration stated yesterday that, throughout the operation, access to the roundabout from the TF-5 towards Santa Cruz will need to be shut down, impacting traffic from the North, as well as access to and from TF-24 and Avenida del Astrofísico Francisco Sánchez.
Hence, entry to the roundabout will only be possible through the TF-5 access, heading north, solely to proceed to the exit leading to Trinidad Avenue, as well as via entry from the mentioned avenue, but only to reach the exit towards the North.
Due to these closures, alternative routes will be designated through exit 8B, Mayber Street, Camino San Miguel de Geneto, via Domingo González Pérez, and TF-265.
The Cabildo’s president, Rosa Dávila, highlighted the commencement of “the installation of an infrastructure that will serve as an emblem for the island of Tenerife and enhance traffic flow in the vicinity. From the government’s perspective, we have opted for an unprecedented solution in the island’s road network, such as this expansive pedestrian loop, which will facilitate traffic movement at the Padre Anchieta roundabout on a daily basis, ultimately enhancing pedestrian safety.”
First Quarter of 2025
Rosa Dávila additionally emphasised that “it should be acknowledged that this is a highly anticipated project which, coupled with other outlined initiatives by the island government, will enhance traffic fluidity in a critical area for traffic improvement.” .
The island’s president reiterated the expectation that the pedestrian overpass at the Padre Anchieta roundabout “will be operational by the first quarter of 2025.” Furthermore, as mentioned last Thursday upon the arrival of this primary module, the remaining components are set to reach the island by the end of the year.
It was also disclosed that the installation of this initial piece will be supervised by engineer José Romo, the CEO of Fhecor Ingenieros Consultores, who was the mastermind behind this walkway’s design, an architectural feat that earned the 2019 national Innovation and Design awards.
The development of this significant roundabout in La Laguna commenced in November 2021. The project was undertaken by the company Obras Huarte Lain SA for a grand total of 8.8 million Euros.
