SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 5th April (EUROPA PRESS) –

The safety of more than 20,000 students who cross the Padre Anchieta roundabout daily will be enhanced by the Cabildo of Tenerife through the installation of the expansive Pedestrian Ring.

This was emphasised by the president of the island corporation, Rosa Dávila, who also expressed gratitude for the dedication and effort of all the technicians involved in the operation to transport the inaugural module of the eleven planned. She highlighted the significance of an infrastructure that will bolster mobility in the region.

“This monumental structure signifies a significant shift in terms of mobility. We have taken a pivotal stride in alleviating traffic congestion at the Padre Anchieta roundabout, a major bottleneck in vehicular traffic on the island, particularly along the northern highway as it traverses La Laguna (TF-5). Moreover, it will provide assurance to over 20,000 students who traverse the eight pedestrian crossings daily in an area accommodating the passage of 50,000 vehicles each day,” articulated Dávila in a statement.

The president further accentuated that this project is of paramount importance in the island Government’s scheme to mitigate traffic congestion not solely at this pivotal juncture of high traffic but across the entirety of TF-5.

Additionally, the president underscored that this is not merely a pedestrian walkway but is slated to become a “landmark” of Tenerife.

“This walkway will redefine the landscape of Padre Anchieta and the city of La Laguna, boasting a design that clinched the 2019 National Innovation and Design Awards, bestowed by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of Spain. It has been conceptualised by José Romo, the CEO of FHECOR Ingenieros Consultores, a distinguished Spanish professional in road, canal, and port engineering with extensive acclaim internationally,” elucidated Dávila.

José Romo’s portfolio includes the Gordie Howe, North America’s lengthiest cable-stayed bridge, linking the cities of Detroit (USA) and Windsor (Canada), and the Mersey Bridge (Great Britain), acknowledged with the Prestigious Architecture award, one of the most revered global accolades.

The groundwork on this prominent roundabout in La Laguna commenced in November 2021, with the construction tender awarded to Obras Huarte Lain SA for a sum of 8.8 million euros.

The design encompasses a continuous curved ring-shaped beam measuring roughly 100 meters in diameter, sustained by a dedicated support system, with a plaza adjoining the current parking facility of the Faculty of Biology at the University of La Laguna. The total circumference of the ring will span approximately 314 meters.

The expansive Padre Anchieta Pedestrian Ring will elevate road safety standards in a region frequented by university students commuting to the science faculties in the vicinity.
