The Tenerife Government is exploring the formulation of a strategic plan for the hamlet of Masca, situated in the Teno Rural Park, with the aim of enhancing the living conditions of its residents.
A gathering was held by the Minister in charge of Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security, and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, with members of the Barranco de Masca Neighbourhood Association. This meeting was instrumental in identifying areas for improvement in the vicinity of the town, particularly concerning issues related to transport and traffic, the promotion of agricultural activities, and enhancing communication channels for the implementation of the Master Plan for Utilisation and Management (PRUG) of the Teno Rural Park.
In a statement, Blanca Pérez emphasised that “it is imperative to address the needs of Masca residents who inhabit a vulnerable and distinctive area, requiring specific tools to prevent depopulation, among other challenges.”
Efforts will be directed towards implementing measures that enhance the quality of life for residents, support agricultural and livestock activities, as well as the service sector.
“We have already taken steps to regulate activities in the ravine and the pier, but there is a need for further enhancements through other initiatives,” she added.
Pérez indicated a “commitment” to reviewing a set of demands put forward by the local community, which will require specific solutions.
“The objective is to reach a consensus and address these requests to the best of our ability, considering Masca’s status as a protected environment. Compliance with regulations and ensuring security are non-negotiable,” Pérez explained, accompanied by Pedro Millán, the island’s Natural Environment director, and Teno Rural Park technicians.
Furthermore, Pérez mentioned that once the proposals are received, they will be evaluated before reconvening.
“The goal is to outline an action plan and initiate the initial steps to enhance their circumstances,” she stressed.
Pertaining to this, Pérez highlighted that adjustments to the PRUG are being reviewed to elevate residents’ quality of life related to transport and communications.
On his part, the representative from the AV Barranco de Masca, Javier Díaz, communicated the community’s requests to the individual overseeing Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security, and Emergencies, underscoring the importance of preventing the “loss” of practices, customs, and traditions characteristic to the people. He therefore deems it “essential” for them to contribute to decisions concerning the hamlet.
