They say trouble comes in twos. Matías faced a peculiar misfortune three days ago when his car slid off a ferry and plunged into the sea during a voyage between La Gomera and Tenerife operated by the Fred Olsen shipping company. Interestingly, just over two years ago, in 2021, he also lost a house to the lava flows of the Tajogaite volcano in the Aridane Valley. “I now own a house under lava and a car at the seabed,” expressed the unfortunate owner.
Matías’ car vanished into the sea on Holy Saturday while returning to Tenerife with his family after a vacation in La Gomera. “As a regular traveller in first class, my car was parked near the exit. I turned the wheel, engaged the handbrake, as per usual. Upon disembarking the vehicle, I noticed the car floating as the boat left the port breakwater. “I was in a state of shock,” he recounted in an interview with COPE Radio. Canary Islands.
Spotting his vehicle adrift in the water, he instantly recognized it as his “quite large and unique” 4×4. “There was no mistaking that it was my car,” he chuckled, adding, “Formerly, I owned a car, and now I possess a submarine.” Intriguingly, in 2022, another vehicle met a similar fate from a Fred. Olsen ferry, also parked in the ‘premium’ zone.
Matías candidly disclosed that back in 2021, while residing in La Palma, he lost his house in the Aridane Valley due to the Cumbre Vieja eruption. “I seem to have everything except lottery luck,” remarked the businessman, who frequents La Gomera for work. Ironically, he drew a parallel, saying: “During that time, we had to find new attire, lost our work laptop, and precious sentimental items.”
