The opposition in Arico has echoed the outcry of residents over the situation on the Arico coasts during these days of Holy Week, where there have been cases of streets being completely blocked to traffic due to the large concentration of caravans. Some of these caravans are so huge that they have invaded sidewalks, preventing people from passing by. “In the case of Abades in particular, makeshift settlements have sprung up in parts of the urbanization, where residents have felt somewhat intimidated and coerced when passing by, as they are not campers or owners of the caravans parked there.”
Coalición Canaria has denounced on social media, “for weeks we have been reporting the lack of planning by the City Council to regulate the situation of caravans on the coast. What we experienced this Holy Week confirms what we warned about in February, the lack of foresight by the PSOE regarding the invasion of campers during these dates”. Coalición Canaria has reported seeing “faeces in public areas”.
The statement from Arico Somos Todos details the counts made by residents, who tallied around 300 camper vans, campervans, and caravans with both Spanish and foreign number plates, of which residents estimate that around 200 remained parked overnight at the site.
Residents in general describe this situation as complete chaos where the Arico City Council has failed to take the necessary measures. In this regard, the two councillors of Arico Somos Todos are firm and assertive because “since October of last year, we have been highlighting the need to draw up municipal regulations for all matters where the council is responsible for informing, regulating, and if necessary, imposing sanctions in accordance with the law.”
“The two councillors of Arico Somos Todos brought a motion to the council in November of last year, for the council to conduct an audit of municipal regulations with the aim of identifying those that are outdated or non-compliant, those that are lacking, and among them, the most urgent to address the needs of the residents.”
