Yet another lack of geographical knowledge has come to light in the Canary Islands, this time on national television, when several people in Madrid were asked about the location of the Canary Islands.
This situation has been seized upon by some influencers to share their opinions about the Canaries. However, others are trying to address the issue through videos, emphasizing that the lack of knowledge about the islands reflects a general lack of culture regarding the history and geography of the country.
An example of this is Karin Herrero, who has become very popular on TikTok thanks to her videos where she quizzes young people on the street, getting answers that range from funny to ridiculous.
Canaries have been a recurring theme in her questionnaires, like in her latest series of questions to strangers. Among questions about the capital of Asturias or the countries bordering Extremadura, Karin Herrero asked a question that any Canarian would answer without hesitation.
“In which ocean is Tenerife located?” was the question, and at least two surprising answers emerged. The first young woman simply responded with a “what?”, while Karin asked her if she knew whether Tenerife was located in an ocean.
With the second young woman, the conversation was more extensive, but it also started with similar doubts. After a few moments of reflection, she responded with some conviction: “it’s not in an ocean.”
