Adeje’s Passion is renewed in this edition. In it, the role of women takes on a significant prominence, including a new scene at the beginning of the production where the Virgin Mary (portrayed by Ana Oneida Borges Medina), mother of Jesus alongside Mary Magdalene (played by Daura Moreira), among other women, move forward together along the path.

The parable of the shepherd and the sheep has also been taken into account in this edition. This leads to a dialogue between Mary, the Virgin, and Jesus, where Jesus asks his mother to trust in the task entrusted to him. In the same scene, Tabitha’s father, the resurrected girl, thanks Jesus for bringing her back to life. Next, Mary Magdalene, along with the adulteress who was about to be stoned until Jesus saved her, approach the Saviour, who narrates said parable to the people, the moral of which is that people cannot be discriminated against for being different.

The denials of the apostle Peter have been extended both in duration and in the inclusion of other characters, allowing for a better understanding of this part of the plot, where Peter’s feeling of guilt over his betrayal of his master Jesus is highlighted.

The scene of Claudia and Pilate is another novelty of this 2024 edition. A new stage has been built, located in the facade of the main church in the town centre, to carry out this part of the plot. Pilate (played by Elias Gonzalez) and Claudia (portrayed by Silvia Méndez), will reproduce the renowned dialogue about truth, which will be the prelude to Claudia’s song from the balcony, with the actress performing in this role for the first time.

In the Herod and Herodias palace scene, there will be a nod to Salome, Herodias’ daughter and Herod’s niece, where the girl (played by Henar Gómez Pérez) approaches Jesus to offer him an apple, to which he smiles.

Adeje’s Passion is one of the most unique and identifying cultural events in the municipality. It is one of the events with the highest participation of townspeople. This year, around 300 amateur actors and actresses are involved, in addition to the technical and logistical staff who contribute to the staging of this performance year after year.

Under the direction of Laura Marrero, the artistry of Freya Jaén and Conrado Díaz, and “involving personnel from the Culture department, technicians, props managers, set designers, wardrobe, hair and makeup artists, not forgetting the communication dimension from cameras, photography to the editorial team, social media, website, and radio team,” the Adeje representation has become a cultural and tourist attraction of international reference, as indicated by the Town Hall.

The Passion will be broadcast nationally by 13 Televisión. It will also be broadcast in the Archipelago by Televisión Canaria, Mírame Televisión, Canal 4 Televisión, Radio Sur Adeje 107.9 FM, and Adeje Town Hall’s own social media platforms (Facebook and YouTube).

The staging of this almost two-hour theatrical masterpiece takes place on Calle Grande and Plaza de España in Adeje at midday. The Passion begins in the Plaza de la Cruz del Llano, where the Last Supper takes place. Throughout Calle Grande, the scenes representing the final moments of Jesus’ life unfold.

Key Scenes

Among the most significant scenes are the trial of Pontius Pilate, Herod, Judas’ monologue, the prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, and the encounter with the mother leading up to the culmination of the production, in Plaza España, where two crosses already stand in front of an exceptional backdrop with the Barranco del Infierno as the backdrop. In the middle is the third and final cross, where Jesus (portrayed by actor Yehosua Treviño) will utter his final words. Waiting at the foot are the Virgin Mary (played by Ana Oneida Borges Medina), who this year, like the other women, will have a significant role in the portrayal.

The dance of Herod’s dancers, students of dance from the Municipal School of Music and Dance of Adeje, will be present. The costumes have also been revamped by designer Cristian Alayón. Additionally, new armour for the temple guards has been made by El Marqués LARP Shop. As for the makeup, it is handled by Ondani García and Agustín Padrón.
