A unanimous decision was made during the plenary session of the Tenerife City Council of Granadilla de Abona on Wednesday, requesting the Government of the Canary Islands to declare the municipality as a stressed residential market area.
The main goal behind this request is to continue implementing “a variety of tools to address the significant housing issue” that Granadilla de Abona is facing, as stated by the municipal body.
Emphasizing the need to support the social function of housing, the council highlights the importance of introducing affordable rentals to ease the financial burden experienced by many citizens in meeting their rent payments.
The Mayor of Granadilla de Abona, Jennifer Miranda, explained that this request is a step forward in addressing one of the most pressing challenges faced by the municipality – the high cost of housing.
Following the submission of the application, the Government of the Canary Islands, as the relevant authority, will conduct a study to determine whether rent or mortgage expenses exceed 30% of the average income of Granada families.
If this condition is met, residential areas meeting these criteria may be designated as stressed zones.
This request complements other initiatives undertaken by the municipal government coalition, comprising of PSOE and PP, such as unlocking nearly 300 homes in the Los Hinojeros district and allocating over 3,000 square meters to the Canary Institute of Housing for public housing construction.
