Yesterday, La Laguna was immersed in the celebrations of Palm Sunday in honour of the Passion of the Lord. The Bishop of Nivariense, Bernardo Álvarez, led the key events of the day, commencing in the morning outside the Santa Clara monastery. As reported by Nivariense Digital, the contemplative nuns joined the prelate and the attendees, with Álvarez blessing the palm and olive branches carried by the faithful as they proceeded with hymns remembering Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem towards the cathedral.
Indoors, the recently restored organ played as the Palm Sunday Eucharist unfolded. During this service, the Passion according to Saint Mark was recited. In a concise sermon, the bishop urged a moment of reflection on the various characters involved in the Passion, encouraging identification with them. Quoting Pascal, he emphasised that “Christ will endure agony until the end of time.” Following the mass, the procession commemorating Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem took place, accompanied by the Brotherhood of the Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem and Christ the Preacher.
The procession of Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Sentencia and María Santísima de La Amargura, initially planned for the afternoon, was cancelled due to rain. A ceremony was instead held inside the La Concepción church, as confirmed by the Board of Brotherhoods and Brotherhoods. Meanwhile, the procession of the Santísimo Cristo de Las Caídas proceeded from the San Juan Bautista parish, albeit on a shortened route due to adverse weather conditions.
