The Tenerife Island Council will have a new electric substation at the Technological Institute of Renewable Energies (ITER), located in the Granadilla de Abona Industrial Park, which will facilitate the connection of renewable energy plants to the main grid. The decision was made during the latest session of the Board of Directors of the entity belonging to the island’s Corporation, held last Friday. The bidding terms for the construction contract of the 66/20 kV electric infrastructure, with a capacity of 50 MVA for an exact amount of 2,593,134 Euros, were approved within this framework. The island’s councillor for Innovation, Research and Development, Juan José Martínez, highlights that the project is crucial to strengthen the integration of renewable energy plants into the existing electrical grid. Martínez explains that the new substation will “improve the connection of these installations, as well as facilitate their integration and growth”. He emphasizes: “This objective involves launching this new substation adapted to the latest requirements”.

Enhancing Connectivity

From a technical perspective, the councillor argues that “increasing the voltage in renewable installations facilitates their connection and operation within this established infrastructure”. This, he adds, “lays the foundation for future expansion and growth capacity”. The scalable infrastructure provided by the substation ensures that it can adapt to the projected increase in the installation of renewable energy generation plants and the energy demand in the area.

Abona Substation

The new ITER electric substation will allow the connection to the transmission network of renewable energy generation plants, both from ITER and other developers, at the Abona 220/66 kV substation, located in the Granadilla Industrial Park. This installation will increase the special regime transformation capacity at the node. Initially, 21 MW of power are planned to be connected, leaving a free transformation capacity of around 25 MW. The ITER substation will also have a 50 MVA transformer, and the connection layout to the Abona substation will run parallel to the roads of the Granadilla Industrial Park.

Procedures with the Spanish Electricity Grid Manager (REE) for the connection of generation units through this substation have already begun. These procedures include signing the Agreement for the drafting and processing of the technical administrative project, and the Project Assignment Contract (CEP) between ITER and REE, which will allow the construction of the necessary infrastructure at the Abona Substation for the connection of the ITER substation and its associated renewable energy generation plants.
