SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 22 March (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory Minister and former Canary Islands president, Ángel Víctor Torres, has volunteered to appear in the recently approved investigation commission by the Parliament Plenary to shed light on any political liabilities stemming from irregularities in the procurement of medical supplies during the covid-19 crisis in Torres’ administration.
“I’m willing to address any question or issue they wish to discuss with me,” said Ángel Víctor Torres in media statements, expressing his sadness for “not being able to save more lives in the Canary Islands.” The Minister highlighted the joint efforts of his Government and civil society, resulting in the Canary Islands having “the lowest death rate per 100,000 inhabitants nationwide, conducting PCR tests for all nursing home residents and staff.”
The minister noted the nearly 200 deaths during the pandemic in the Canary Islands, comparing it to other regions where “thousands perished” and where investigations were not welcomed. He expressed regret at the Popular Group’s lack of support for the congressional investigation commission, questioning their reluctance. He emphasised the need for fair proceedings, devoid of deceit or bias.
Explaining his change in stance towards the investigation commission, Ángel Víctor Torres described the circumstances under which the Socialist Group now supports it, unlike in the past. The removal of secrecy around the ‘mask’ case influenced this decision.
Regarding the opposition’s demand for accountability, Torres found it ironic that the Popular Party, with members facing charges, spearheaded the call for an investigation. He urged for a more civil discourse to prevent disaffection among citizens.
In response to internal criticism within the Popular Party, Torres called for a more measured approach to opposition politics, aiming for transparency and coherence in public affairs. He pointed out the disparity between electoral victory and forming a government, citing the example of Feijóo’s polarising style.
Refuting allegations that the Emergency Committee chaired by Torres directed procurement decisions during the pandemic, he affirmed the group’s integrity and denied discussing specific companies. Torres remained optimistic that the truth behind leaked emails would be clarified in due course.
