Around fifty primary and secondary school students from La Milagrosa school in La Orotava planted 21 trees in one of the green areas of the Cultural and Agro-environmental Park of Doña Chana. The species planted in this activity are native such as olive trees, beeches, and Canary Island cedars.
By taking this action, the municipality of La Orotava joins the European campaign One tree for Europe, an initiative by the youth association Team Europe with the support of the European Parliament offices in Spain. It aims for all municipalities in the country to plant at least one tree as a symbol of their commitment to local sustainability and the fight against deforestation in Europe.
With this commitment, the mayor of the town, Francisco Linares, pledges that the City Council will plant over 100 trees annually in various locations around the municipality until 2030, “as well as carry out other actions to continue working towards environmental protection, caring for the natural surroundings, and contributing to the pursuit of a more sustainable world.”
The workers of the company managing the parks and gardens also planted 40 trees in the tree pits along Mercedes Pinto and Emilio Luque avenues. The participating students received a talk on the significance of trees in cities as they help absorb CO2 emissions, lower urban temperatures, and reduce noise pollution. The town currently has a record of 4,144 tree species, of which 3,096 are trees, and the remainder palm trees and dragon trees. Additionally, La Orotava is developing a Tree Plan.
