The Sports Department of the Arona City Council is teaming up with the Sports Department of the Tenerife Island Council to host the ‘Squatting to Beat Cancer’ workshop on Saturday, 6th April at the Los Cristianos Pavilion.

These activities are part of the 5th edition of the Women and Sports initiative, which offers a range of activities and workshops aimed at promoting physical activity among young people and women on the island as a key tool for enhancing health and quality of life.

Physical exercise is a primary non-pharmacological intervention to consider before, during, and after cancer treatment. Engaging in physical activity can enhance quality of life, alleviate the side effects of the disease and its treatments, improve treatment efficacy, and in some cases, prolong the life expectancy of patients.

The event will kick off at 9:00 am and run until 1:00 pm, focusing on the following specific topics:

– Physical exercise pre-treatment

– Physical exercise during treatment

– Physical exercise post-treatment

– Physical exercise as a preventative measure

– Personal testimony: “The Impact of Exercise during my Treatment”

The workshop will be led by Laura Capdevila Riverola, a graduate in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences, a Master in Physical Exercise Prescription for individuals with pathologies and special needs, and an expert in Physical Exercise and Cancer, with over 7 years of experience training cancer patients.

Pilar Caba Hernández, a world sailing champion who was diagnosed with Leukemia in the summer of 2022, will also be sharing her story. Throughout her treatment and life, she persisted in training “against all odds” until she successfully overcame the disease in 2024. Her experience is invaluable in conveying the core message of the ‘Squatting to Beat Cancer’ session, which emphasises that “individuals with cancer not only can but should engage in exercise.”

Participants must be at least 14 years old, and free registration will open from Monday, 25th March, at www.deportestenerife.es, with limited spaces available. La Fast and Isola are collaborating to provide healthy refreshments for the participants.

A child care service will be offered to promote work-life balance if needed.
