Yesterday, Juan Antonio Rojas, the PP representative for the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, along with Carlos Tarife, the first deputy mayor and councilor for Public Services, Environment and European Projects in the capital, raised concerns about the delay in commencing the expansion of the Buenos Aires capital treatment plant. The project, scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2023, is still pending.
The conservative party has presented a proposal in the Congress of Deputies urging the State Government to provide an update on the current status of the project and to clarify the reasons behind the delay. This project is crucial for Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the entire island.
In addition, Carlos Tarife, as the PP spokesperson in the local council, will push for another proposal during the council’s plenary session to seek consensus among the various political groups regarding the expansion of the treatment plant.
Both the deputy and the first deputy mayor stressed the significance of the project, which involves an investment exceeding 20 million euros and will have a treatment capacity of 55,000 cubic meters per day, purifying water from the city’s metropolitan area.
Tarife emphasised that, upon completion, the project will provide up to 20,000 cubic meters of irrigation water daily to areas ranging from Santa Cruz to the San Lorenzo valley, Arona, La Laguna, Tegueste, and help eliminate discharges into the sea in Cabo Llanos and the capital’s bay.
The PP highlighted that the project, under the supervision of the Ministry of Transition, has been plagued by unjustifiable delays. The deputy recalled Minister Teresa Ribera’s visit to the site in February 2022, where she promised completion by the end of summer 2023. Rojas intends to monitor the initiatives presented in Congress by the PP to remind the minister of her commitment during her visit to Tenerife.
Recently, Tarife was informed by the Ministry that the new projected completion date for the expansion works at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Buenos Aires is July 26, 2025, citing issues with the channeling actions on Manuel Hermoso Rojas Avenue.
Tarife expressed discontent, stating, “This additional delay is baseless. We advanced the canal opening of the avenue by two months to meet the September 26, 2024 deadline, yet the project has now been extended to 2025, despite the initial completion date being 2022.”
