SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 20th March (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of the Tenerife Council, Rosa Dávila, reiterated the decision on Wednesday to abandon the idea of constructing the Fonsalía port (Guía de Isora) in order to focus on enhancing the functionality of the Los Cristianos port and improving traffic flow.
During a press conference to announce the outcomes of the Government Council, reference was made to a meeting involving the Canary Islands Government, the Ports of Tenerife, and the Tenerife and ‘green islands’ councils, where a strategic plan was devised to ease the congestion at the Los Cristianos port.
The aim is to implement “immediate measures” in the land area of the port, particularly in preparation for the Easter period to prevent cars from obstructing the port’s exit roads. Additionally, there are plans in the medium term to underground Chayofita Avenue, a project estimated to cost around 90 million euros.
There is also a proposal to divert a portion of the freight transport to the Granadilla port. “This is our main focus,” he emphasised.
The Vice President and Minister of Tourism, Lope Afonso, expressed disappointment that the discussion around this topic is ongoing. On Tuesday, Casimiro Curbelo, the ASG spokesperson in Parliament, called for the construction of the port, despite promises made by the regional government in the previous term to conduct a study of alternatives, which, unfortunately, was not fulfilled.
