In an effort to tackle the issue of pigeon overpopulation and its detrimental impact on the city’s historic sites and public health, the City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has decided to employ a falcon as a natural deterrent.
Tomorrow, the official launch of this initiative will take place at Plaza de España, where comprehensive details will be disclosed.
According to the Council, a total of 1,037 pigeons were captured in the municipality last December. These pigeons were then taken to the Fauna Control Service facilities at Tenerife North Airport to train falcons and enhance their flying capabilities, with the primary goal of ensuring air safety.
Throughout December, a series of actions were implemented, including the installation of cages, area inspections, assessments, and the removal of male and female pigeons.
These tasks, which involved pigeon capture, required the expertise of three specialised bird control technicians.
