The mayor of Icod de los Vinos, Javier Sierra, has issued a decree to all residents to limit the use of potable water in specific situations in response to the water emergency declaration made by the Island Council on March 1 due to the drought conditions following the winter.
As reported in a statement by the Icod City Council this Friday, the mayor explains that these measures have been implemented to ensure the availability of water resources, as well as to achieve the objectives of reducing water consumption.
Hence, the watering of private gardens, farms, trees, green spaces, and sports facilities is now restricted, except in cases of emergency (water stress) and for new plantations.
Filling of pools and fountains without a proper recovery or closed-loop system in place will also be prohibited.
The mayor has also reiterated the ban on connecting public water supply systems to well or gallery sources, with potential suppression of supply for health reasons in case of violations.
This directive further empowers the Local Police and municipal water company staff to monitor and enforce compliance with the provisions outlined in the decree, with possible sanctions and fines for violators.
