Javier Sierra, the mayor of Icod de los Vinos, has issued a decree limiting the use of drinking water to human consumption, hygiene, and pet care. This measure is being implemented in response to the water emergency declared by the Cabildo due to the effects of the drought impacting the island. The mayor explains to the public that these measures are being taken to ensure water resources are safeguarded, meet consumption reduction goals, and comply with regulations.

The municipal decree specifies restrictions on using water for garden irrigation, orchards, trees, private green and sports areas, except for emergency situations (water stress) and new plantations. Filling pools and fountains without a recovery system or closed circuit is prohibited. It is reminded that the use of drinking water in inflatable pools is allowed, as well as washing vehicles in public areas.

Javier Sierra emphasizes the prohibition of connecting public water supply networks to sources from wells or galleries, with the possibility of supply suspension for sanitary reasons in case of infringement.

Furthermore, the decree specifies that the Local Police and personnel from the Municipal Tourism and Services Company of Icod de Los Vinos, SA (Icodemsa) are authorized to monitor and enforce compliance with the decree. Any violative behaviour may be reported to the Mayor’s Office and could result in fines as per applicable laws.

In a statement released yesterday, the municipal government also indicates that inquiries related to the previous regulations can be addressed at the customer service channels of Icodemsa, which can also be used to report any water loss or misuse.
