SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 8th March (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Cabildo of Tenerife is set to undertake initiatives to enhance water conduction between the Tágara and Trevejos reservoirs to ensure water supply for irrigation in the Vilaflor area and the Abona region, located in the southern part of the island.
Counsellor of the Primary Sector, Valentín González, conducted a meeting with farmers from the region, where the Mayor of Vilaflor, Agustina Beltrán, was also present, to inform them about the measures to be implemented by the Cabildo in order to alleviate the impact of drought, “especially as we approach summer and the subsequent warmer months,” following the declaration of a water emergency.
In addition to initiatives aimed at enhancing the conveyance and distribution of irrigation water in the region, Valentín González revealed during the meeting that, to enhance efficiency, the Cabildo will establish the necessary mechanisms to promote the exchange of resources with the objective of alleviating water scarcity at medium and high altitudes.
Another measure to be implemented by the Cabildo, outlined in the emergency declaration, is a study for the reactivation of disused facilities (such as wells and galleries), as well as increasing their exploitation capacities, while also evaluating hydrological risks and economic implications.
Valentín González will hold information sessions with farmers from all regions of the island to share comprehensive updates, as the water situation in the Tenerife countryside necessitates a “continual dialogue” with the sector, as well as the “engagement” of all social and economic stakeholders in Tenerife.
