Yesterday, a virtual meeting was led by Pedro Martín, the general secretary of the PSOE in Tenerife and president of the Socialist Group in the Cabildo, along with fifteen socialist mayors of the Island. The focus was on tackling the major challenges faced by Tenerife and the proposed solutions by the PSOE. Key topics included the Water Emergency Plan for the Countryside, the housing crisis, queues, and the necessity to advance projects and initiatives left by the previous island government group.
Currently, the PSOE governs 15 out of the 31 municipalities in Tenerife and collaborates in the administration of an additional four. Among these are Adeje, Arico, Buenavista, Candelaria, Fasnia, Granadilla de Abona, La Laguna, La Matanza, Puerto de la Cruz, Los Silos, Tacoronte, El Tanque, Tegueste, La Victoria, and Vilaflor. The PSOE also has a role in Garachico, La Guancha, Güímar, and Icod de los Vinos.
Recent drought conditions have led to water usage restrictions in municipalities like Fasnia and Arico, making it a significant subject of discussion during the meeting. Pedro Martín proposed specific projects for the island, gaining support from all parties within the Corporation.
The issue of limited affordable rental housing was addressed, stressing the necessity for a modification of the previous programme initiated by the CC and PP government, which had a budget of just five million Euros. With the Cabildo now having authority over housing, following the decree law approved by the Canary Islands Government, Pedro Martín urged the government to collaborate with municipalities in investing in social housing to alleviate the current housing crisis.
With regards to transportation, Pedro Martín highlighted the inefficacy of measures announced by the Cabildo president, Rosa Dávila, advocating for more substantial projects such as the La Laguna variant prepared by the socialists. He also pointed out the readiness to begin works on the Southern Highway from Las Américas to San Isidro.
