SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 8th March (EUROPA PRESS) –

On Friday, the Tenerife Government hosted the official ceremony in honour of ‘International Women’s Day’, showcasing the institution’s commitment to equality for women and girls, and ensuring their complete and active involvement.

During the event, held in the Plaza del Cabildo, a proclamation was delivered by the island president, Rosa Dávila; the director of Equality and Diversity, Patricia León; the Minister of Social Action, Águeda Fumero; the director of Social Action for the island, Yolanda Baumgartner, and members from other political groups within the institution.

The Government vows, according to the proclamation, to push for gender equality across all sectors of society.

“We acknowledge the existence of ongoing systemic disparities that impact women within our communities and are dedicated to actively and effectively addressing them, particularly prioritising support for those women facing the greatest difficulties, such as women with disabilities, migrant women, women from different ethnic backgrounds, and women residing in rural areas. Progress cannot be achieved without the involvement of half the population, that is women, nor at their expense,” stated the president.

Additionally, the island government affirms its commitment to “implementing strategies and initiatives that enhance gender equality in access to education, employment, healthcare, political engagement, and decision-making roles at all levels.”

Moreover, the Council calls upon all local bodies to undertake specific actions to achieve gender equality in decision-making processes, eliminate the gender pay gap, eradicate the unconscious biases faced by many women, and ensure fair representation of women across all public spheres while fostering a secure and respectful environment for all women and girls.

As per the institution, it is “crucial to promote publicly provided care services to prevent motherhood from becoming a hindrance for women in the job market, as the primary caregiving responsibilities often fall on them.”

The Government has issued a “call to arms” for communities to “stand in solidarity with women worldwide and collaborate towards building a fairer and more equal future for all individuals, irrespective of their gender.”

According to them, “equality policies need to cut across all areas of action; at the local level, we are dedicated to fostering advancements that will lead to a superior, fairer, and ultimately more democratic society.”
