“It is a very saddening news”. Poli Suárez, Educational Advisor of the Canary Islands Government, expressed this phrase on Friday in response to the investigation opened on two secondary school students from the La Salle San Ildefonso School in Santa Cruz de Tenerife for disseminating fake nude images through WhatsApp of at least three female classmates from the school and other minors altered with an artificial intelligence application.
“Educational Inspection is working with the private educational institution to determine what has happened. An investigation has been launched, and we must be cautious until the report’s ruling is known,” stated Poli Suárez.
The Ministry of Education, National Police and the Minor’s Prosecutor’s Office have opened an investigation into these two students, which could extend to others from the school, after schoolmates at La Salle discovered on February 21st that they had about twenty photos on their mobile phones of three other La Salle students and other unrelated girls, which could constitute a crime of damaging their honour.
“We will take the necessary actions in response to this case,” added the regional Education official. Suárez also took the opportunity to urge educational institutions, both public and private like La Salle, to implement the Ministry’s directive of “not allowing mobile phones in classrooms.”
“We will get to the bottom of the problem and try to find solutions based on the conclusions of the investigation led by Educational Inspection,” concluded Poli Suárez.
