The exhibition Popular Dressing in the XX Century is now open in El Rosario. It showcases some of the dressing styles that were prevalent in Tenerife from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. The initiative features 18 outfits for both men and women and will be on display at the House of Culture in La Esperanza until the 29th of March. The exhibition can be visited from 8:30 to 20:00 on weekdays.
The opening ceremony, held last Monday, was attended by the Minister of Employment and Education, Efraín Medina, and the mayor of El Rosario, Escolástico Gil. Medina stated, “From the Council, through the Insular Crafts Company and with the advice of the Sectorial Council of Traditional Clothing in Tenerife, we aim to highlight the importance of spreading our material and immaterial heritage for its preservation.” He added, “We should do this by respecting our traditions, promoting the proper use of traditional clothing and aiding in its correct preservation.”
On the other hand, Escolástico Gil thanked the support of the Council for launching this exhibition, and emphasised the importance of “promoting and preserving our identity, even in matters such as traditional clothing, which we keep alive thanks to popular celebrations like pilgrimages and traditional dances.” He continued, “It is an honour for us to enjoy this exhibition in El Rosario, a municipality so deeply rooted in rural life and traditions, where we have a popular garment like the esperancera blanket, a true symbol that we respect and continue to wear.”
Mannequins and Display Cabinets
The exhibition includes mannequins, display cabinets, informative panels and traditional pieces of popular fashion from Tenerife. The aim is to showcase the different dressing styles on the island and the various influences that western fashion had on the local attire. Ultimately, it is about educating and spreading the “significant didactic value and legacy we received from our ancestors regarding the traditional and typical clothing of the island.”
This is not the only folkloric proposal on the calendar in El Rosario. The Traditions Day of El Rosario will return with its IX edition on Saturday, 23rd of March in La Esperanza. At 11:00, there will be a livestock fair displaying various traditional activities from the primary sector. In the evening, at the Adelantado square and with free entry, concerts by Group Añate, Ciro Corujo and the timple player from Fuerteventura, Domingo Rodríguez, El Colorao, will take place.
The IX Traditions Day is once again organised by the Cultural Department of the El Rosario City Council, sponsored by Egatesa and with the collaboration of La Molineta.
In addition to the morning livestock exhibition, held around La Sardinera street, there will be the show Lana Lunera, by the Group Añate, starting from 19:00. This is a tribute to all those craftsmen who, in one way or another, work with wool and it premiered at the last Regional Crafts Fair of Canarias, captivating the attending audience.
