Candelaria honours the mayor and councillors of the Municipal Council of the Second Republic as recognition from the municipality for their short-lived work, carried out between March 6 and July 31, 1936, a management cut short by the violent coup. The distinction was accepted by the relatives of the mayor and councillors of that Council.
The mayoress, Mari Brito, highlighted that this act is a gesture of respect towards those who, at a crucial moment in our history, contributed to the development of the municipality in particularly adverse circumstances. “Democratic memory, in its essence, goes beyond the simple recollection of past events; it is an act of responsibility and learning. It is about understanding that the events that occurred in the past are not just stories, but lessons that we must internalize and use to guide our actions in the present and the future.”

The official chronicler of Candelaria, Octavio Rodríguez, after extensive research, provided a historical overview of the Council formed by Juan Quintero Guerra, mayor; Eladio Ferrera Núñez, first deputy mayor; Trino Rodríguez Delgado, second deputy mayor; Juan Bello Padilla, syndic procurator; Fermín Díaz Ramos, alternate syndic procurator; Francisco Garabote García, custodian of the municipal funds; the managing councillors Juan de la Cruz Tejeray Domingo Coello del Castillo, as well as councillors Domingo Chico Baute, Juan Coello Núñez and Francisco Rodríguez Cruz.
A Council that the chronicler pointed out was established on this day (March 6), 88 years ago, and was dissolved before even five months had passed since its inception, leading to persecution, repression, and imprisonment for them, solely due to their loyalty to the Republic and their progressive ideology.
